Read from August 12 to 21, 2012

This was a random find at the library--I liked the cover. And it sat at house a few weeks while I was finishing up some other books. I finally got around to it and wondered if I'd have the energy for something as "dreary" looking as this book.

What I found, though, is the work of a modern-day Mark Twain (lots of local color, dark themes, a sense of humor, and even an "Injun Joe" type character). This story twists and turns like the river the Sue Ellen, Jinx, Terry, and Sue Ellen's mama find themselves on. This is probably one of the darkest books I've ever read, but also one of the funniest. (Upon cremating their friend Mae Lynn's body so they can take her to Hollywood, which was her dream, the group decides they need to make some thoughtful comments. Jinx says it best: "I'm sorry it's so hot in there!") At times the story resembled a bit of a fractured fairy tale. It even managed to throw in a few twists that I didn't see coming.

I gave this book 5 stars, but would give it ten if I could. I think it's going to be in my top 10 for this year.
