I've followed Powell's work for awhile, and while I've always enjoyed his art I always think his story lines fall utterly flat, so I was excited to see how his illustrations would work with another writer.

Year of the Beasts started with such a promising line, and it all went downhill from there. The narrator was distant and mostly unlikeable, and the real point of the story waited, for some inexplicable reason, to come in until the very last chapters. Even then, the resolution was hazy and unclear. Tessa found her friends again? She's going to finally wash her hair? There were bigger things at stake in this book that weren't fully explored. The weaving of comics and prose is such a good idea, but in this book, a lot of separate parts just don't add up to a cohesive whole.
