This is a 3 1/2 star book for me. The story alternates between a morbidly obese home-bound former academic and a teenage boy with a addict mother. Everything I know about really big people comes from the Biggest Loser, so my understanding is not beyond the surface. I felt like the author was able to provide such an empathetic window on this man's life while still highlighting how his own behaviors that were keeping him stuck. I loved this adolescent boy who was doing an amazing job at parenting himself because of and in spite of his frustratingly mediocre mother. She was this mix of encouraging (e.g., helping him practice baseball) and completely self destructive and absent.
