I found this book completely unenjoyable. But like a roadside accident, I could not look away. Yes, it's well written. Yes, Franzen offers insights into what it means to live in America in this day and age. Yes, the characters are real and human and intricately crafted. But in the end, a novel has to take the reader on a trip from one point to another. This book is more like a cheap and pointless carnival ride where the reader ends up in the same place at the end. I came to the conclusion that the ride's jolts and curves were less than worthwhile and I wish I had used my ticket another way.
