>>>> Satisfying conclusion to the third book, a bit silly in parts, but heroic, dashing, straightforward throughout. As discussed, an interesting precursor to every action hero in the century that followed this work.

>>> This strikes me as a precursor to the pulp fiction and B movies to follow in 20th century media. There's a directness to the way the story unfolds. A potential villain is described, then appears on the protagonist's path only a few pages later.

No deep layers of foreshadowing or plot structure, but still an enjoyable dose of adventure at every turn. These books were described by one blog as "the Indiana Jones stories of their day", which seems to fit pretty well, and describe the pleasures they provide. (at page 289)

>> Finished with Book 1 (page 218): Very enjoyable! Interesting quality of innocence even to the scenes of violence in the book, which makes me think of its pre-WWI date of authorship (1912). At this point in our history: no trench warfare, no atom bomb, no Holocaust, and lots of new scientific innovations. A (relatively) innocent time in which to imagine adventures...

> At page 116: Kind of cheesy in parts, but full of swashbuckling adventure.
I'm having fun with it. :)

Nice connection to the imagination of Arabian Nights, and another generational step back into the history of SciFi, moving from Heinlein in the 50's, Orson Scott Card in the 80's, and John Scalzi in the 2000's
