Lane's book discusses the development of life on Earth, focusing on certain elements (such as photosynthesis, sexual reproduction, and warm-bloodedness) that would impact generations and eons of lifeforms. He discusses some of the latest research on everything from thermal vents to aging, and pretty much resists the urge to pontificate on the spiritual realm. Plus it's given me a lot to think about in terms of biological backgrounds for worldbuilding when I write.
