Savages was pretty great, but the prequel is a grand slam. By giving his characters backstory, you really understand why Chon, O and Ben are so close. It also gives a fantastic overview of how the dream of the 60s turned into the "Me" 70s, which morphed into the corporate greed of 80s cocaine culture.
