really liked it

This was a fast and entertaining read. It's the first part of a series for young adults. It could easily be read in a day, but you'll want to have the next book available - it ends just as the plot really starts to thicken.

The main characters, Talis and Mara, have an interesting relationship that I hope will be elaborated on in the next book. The plot is full of intrigue - waring tribes, family feuds, and a young hero just discovering his power. There's plenty to keep you guessing as you read.

My only complaint is that at times I felt like I was reading the condensed version of the book. I was left with a lot of questions about why the communities responded the way they did, how exactly magic works in this world, and even what each character looked like. It *is* a book for a younger audience, but I think a lot could be added that would enrich the writing. I'd give it a 3.5 for that reason if that were an option.
