Read from July 23 to 27, 2012

The third book in the series returns with familiar faces Vix, Sabina and Trajan. This book was probably my least favourite of the three out so far but still pretty good. The book focused very much on the legions and military life which didn’t really appeal to me but was expressed very well. In general, I found that although this book was good, it didn’t interest me as much as the others. Trajan was a much less exciting emperor, Vix a replica of his father, Plotina verging on delusional, etc. I wanted more loveable characters. I wanted more about patrician society than war. I still adore the writing style and the ease at which the author slips you into the intriguing world of the empire. Definitely worth the read but for me it certainly didn’t outshine the first book.
