The first section of it is about women traveling in the steerage of a ship from Japan to California, where they are to meet their new husbands for the first time. It is written using exclusively "we." No single character is named or drawn out of the mass of women on this ship. It listed everything that they as a group experienced... as in we slept huddled together; we talked late at night about our new husbands; we wanted to know what it was like to be with a man, etc. etc. I thought that was a pretty interesting way to write a short story, evoking the collective experiences with this group of women.
