bookshelves: picturebooks, read-aloud

Llama Llama Red Pajama (Llama Llama) by Anna Dewdney is the story of an impatient youngster who needs reassurance that his Mama is near and can be counted on.

Dewdney's large illustrations make this a good choice for storytimes or group reading. The facial expressions of Baby and Mama Llama clearly reveal how they are feeling. I especially enjoyed the changes in the facial expressions of the little stuffed llama. My favorite images are kisses, waiting waiting, hollers, shouts, wailing, Mama running, and last three pictures.

The large font, and rhyming text make this a good choice as a read-aloud. The story should make young and old smile, while delivering the messages that Mama is near AND that less drama is needed. This bedtime story should provide comfort to most children. The large font make this a choice for young readers to try themselves, along with others in this series. 4 star rating.

For ages 3 to 6, bedtime, family, security, worry, repetition, alliteration, rhyme, series, and fans of llama and Anna Dewdney.
