This is a mystery with a difference. It is beautifully and tightly written, but, once again, the last half is too long. However, it has a most satisfying conclusion. "a searing gothic novel of love, longing and justice..." says a review. Set just after the Great War when the influenza epidemic was in full force, this story captures small town country life in NSW without actually going into the town! Quinn comes back from the war, having fled 10 years before when his beloved sister was murdered. He hides in the hills as he doesn't dare show himself. The war is treated exceptionally well - so many are written with mixed results. This book is long-listed for the UK's Golden Dagger award.
