The Orchardist

I received this book as an advanced copy through Goodreads. I am rather pleased with the writing, descriptive element and beautiful scenery that is basically a character within itself.
Amanda Coplin has a manner of writing that is different from many other authors. She has minimal conversation, in my opinion, and lets the scenery and actions tell the story. A lonely orchard grove owner, Tallmadge, that is left solitary due to family death and tragedy aids two young pregnant teens who are equally solitary due to tragedy in this novel. Tallmadge takes on the role as father and attempts to provide a home to the child born to a broken mother. A complicated family structure begins where love is apparent, but not openly spoken. I was frustrated with the ending, because I felt as if Angeline ended up exactly as Tallmadge worked so hard to avoid, alone. Despite all that, it is a very beautiful, well written story that I would recommend readers to take a chance on.

I enjoyed the book because I am from the Wenatchee area and know the area very well. This I enjoyed but I never really developed any great feelings or empathy for the characters. There was something missing. I never felt there was love or warmth or even a real connection between any of the characters. There seemed to be a very shallow disconnect with all of the relationships.
