Adam and Grace Lockwood moved to a remote cottage located on the moors of North Yorkshire to escape the fast pace of London. Hawthorne Cottage, once owned by Adam's grandparents, seemed the perfect place to raise their infant daughter, Millie.

A few days after moving in, Adam takes Millie for a stroll along the cliffs bordering the moors. Shortly after, Grace finds Millie alone in her stroller outside the cottage and Adam has gone missing. When the police are unable to finding any clues to Adam's disappearance Grace and Millie return to London.

A year later, with Adam still missing, they return to the cottage and Grace is determined to solve the mystery herself. As she searches through old papers and letters, she becomes convinced that something sinister has happened at Hawthorne Cottage and Adam's disappearance may not be the end of it.

Beneathe the Shadows has all the trappings of a classic gothic novel: an isolated cottage on the moors, an unexplained disappearance, a woman alone determined to suss out the answer, hostile and slightly threatening neighbours, weird happenings in the night, possibly a wee ghostie or two, a snowstorm trapping the occupants from escape or aid, and, of course, a handsome stranger too willing to help who may or may not have something to do with all the mysterious goings-on. In other words, a really fun read!

Although the story is set during the Christmas season, it makes for great summer reading. With all the thrills and chills it provides, it's a great antidote to the summer heat.
