Through the eyes of a charming young couple, Jai and Kaahi, we see different aspects of Indian life. We experience what it is like to be a student in Mumbai through their eyes when they are students. We experience an Indian wedding through their wedding. When they travel through India, so do we. When they move to the United States and experience culture shock, so do we.

Throughout the book, the author thoughtfully includes "asides" of translations from Indian words and phrases and also bits of history about the subject matter.

Most poignantly, we see via this couple, their families, and their friends, what Indian civil war did, cruelly dividing families and shifting chunks of the population to new areas, to sink or swim on their own.

I enjoyed "riding along" with this lovely couple and learned a great deal. But as literature, it was obviously written by a non-native speaker of English. The writing style was also choppy because of the frequent historical asides. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Indian life or in different cultures in general, but the reader must have patience to plow through the language and the history.

I received this book for free in order to review it for The Kindle Book Review website. I am in no way affiliated with either the author or any publisher(s).
