really liked it
bookshelves: 1970-present, prose

“It is awfully easy to be hard-boiled about everything in the daytime, but at night it is another thing.”

Hemingway is a formidable prose artist, but everyone already knows that. This novel is really sad and often really funny, exquisitely written, characters rendered brilliantly.
