In these stories Chekhov is not enamored of plot and action. Instead he treads somewhere between the paths of fiction and poetry. His stories, like poems, raise questions, touch nerves, give perspectives, attitudes, situations, behaviors that lay beneath the surface of our lives, even now. They are reflections of life and eternity. Perhaps this is the true territory of the short story – the essence of life distilled, boiled down to a truth, a true experience.
