Very well thought out for a young adult book. It did a fairly good job of staying away from common themes and plots. After all, it was about mermaids, which is a step in the right direction (the right direction being away from werewolves and vampires). The romance plot was not "I'm in love with you but I want to eat you," or "I'm in love with you but I'm so dangerous," which was refreshing. It was more along the lines of: "You can talk to fish, so you will probably have to be married to my brother, the king, because that will prevent a mermaid war. So I'm in love with you, but I will never even tell you." Best part of the book? This guy actually follows through with the plan of staying away from her. How often does that happen? And despite the fact that they stay away from each other, it's still romantic, because the author took the time to make the guy truly likeable, unlike many young adult romance dudes, who are mostly versions of either Edward or Jacob.
Well written humor. Fun, original read.
