In “The Woman in White” by Wilkie Collins, I thought this story was about a ghost story. A pale face woman in a white dress that Hartright met on a quite street around midnight made me think that she was a ghost. Again, in the school that one boy told his teacher that he saw a ghost in the graveyard made me believe that there would be a ghost in this story. The picture of the book’s cover also made me think this way. I was surprised by the mid of the story that I have to change my idea about the plot of this book. It was not a ghost story, but it was a sad story of two women. I was surprised by the plot of the story that brought in many characters. I was a little bit confused with those characters. Anyway, I kept reading this book excitingly to see how the story would end. The story was divided into three parts that were narrated by two main characters, Walter Hartright and Marian Halcombe. The story was told in a time line but from different characters. The author used this technique to make the story sound more interesting. I was amused to keep following to see the secrets of three characters, Ann Catherick, Sir Percival Glyde and Count Fosco. I was surprised by their mysterious secrets. I also surprised with Pesca, an Italian professor, that he was a member of secret society that seem to have nothing in this story. Until about the end, when Pesca revealed his status, he could help Hartright to finish his mission on Count Fosco. I was surprised with the plan of Count Fosco that brought him a successful result even the death of Catherick did not go along according to the plan. It was just a coincident that still keeps the plan gone well. I give 5 stars to this book.
