The essays here are mostly centered on uncovering bits of history that appear to be slipping from the margins of history. Herbert comes across as the diligent enthusiast interested in spreading history wider than the boundaries that set the Western Tradition so firmly into place. As Foucault has observed, Europe is full of ruins, visible history, Herbert uncovers the story behind some of these.
