This book is required summer reading for my son's 5th grade class - they will be studying the Civil War in history this fall - so we read this book together. It's a little heavy for 5th grade - but not any heavier than watching the news - with the on-going Iraq/Afghanistan wars, I thought it was good for my son to see a glimpse of the "realities" of war that are the subject of this book - TV and video games glamorize so much - and to realize that for the soldiers living through the hell of war - the politics that put them there are so separate and peripheral.

I don't know that my son totally understood or appreciated the book on the same level that I did, but he told me he would give the book 5 stars...hopefully he will read it again when he is older...and it will be more than just a fictional "war story" to him.
