It's easy to see why In The Shadow Of Gotham won the Edgar prize for best first mystery novel. The author did a bang- up job with the setting--turn of the century New York plays an important contextual thread that weaves its way through the plot. The protagonist, detective Ziele, is a tortured cop whose own backstory is neatly revealed as he works through both the halls of academia and New York's underworld. There were a few plot clunkers, as one might expect with a first novel. On the whole, however, it is a good beach read and a series worth pursuing.
