I listened to this as an audio book, so I can't speak to the way the text and illustrations interacted with one another. (Although I may flip through a copy just to see all of the pictures - from what other reviewers have said, it sounds like I'm missing out by not seeing them!)

This book has everything a good kids' book should: slightly mysterious plot; a main character worth rooting for; believable dialogue and characters.

Even as an adult reader, there were twists in the plot that surprised me, and the book overall was a delight. I imagine young readers would really enjoy this one.

(And the audio version was great. The reader perfectly captured the voices and atmosphere, and there were also some neat sound effects.)
