James Van Praagh is the brains behind the TV show "Ghost Whisperer" on CBS, although that is about one of his friends and not himself. To give himself credibility, he tells how he learned he was a medium, he started seminary high school, but then inexplicably leaves the school and becomes a lapsed Catholic and ultimately a full time medium (although we don't learn why or when any of this occurred). Then he tries to tell the reader all about ghosts, which is supposedly the main topic of the book. The problem is that he ends up off topic quite a bit (auras, meditations) and much of that is unsupported "knowledge" (i.e. how does he come to know this by seeing ghosts?). Ultimately, this is a mostly a self-help book dressed up in a lot of new-age lingo ("Think positive" becomes "creating and maintaining a positive energy and life force" and so on). So this wasn't exactly the halloween read I was expecting. Sigh.
