A rather comprehensive study of sexual practices and their attendant (or not) laws through history. It manages to cover 4000 years but doesn't bog the reader down in details. The cases presented are interesting, and I especially liked learning about the legal practice of affrerement from the late medieval period, having never heard of it until now. The book is Western-centric, but I imagine any book that attempted a global survey of sex and sexual law over 4000 years would be truly massive indeed. It would have been nice if this book would have been able to touch on the 20th and 21st centuries, but things changed so much in those time periods that I agree with the author that they deserve their own book, if there isn't one out there already.
