I didn't expect to like this book--I expected it to be tedious and boring, frankly, and I've managed to avoid reading it for a long time, so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. That's not to say that I didn't want to take the titular character by the back of his collar and shake him for being a whiny, weak, tedious person with no sense of responsibility, and it's not to say that I didn't want to do the same to his creation for being a whiny, long-winded, nasty person, and it's not to say that I didn't repeatedly roll my eyes over ridiculous plot conveniences and coincidences (because I did. I rolled them so hard).

Usually when I fail to find any of the characters engaging and sympathetic I automatically dislike a book, but Frankenstein just has too much of interest to offer for me to write it off--it asks too many interesting questions, and has too many interesting parallel structures.

sharon Did you know that there's a stage production of "Frankenstein" in which Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller trade off being Creator and Creature every night? I have every appendage crossed that they'll put out a DVD....
