In this British YA novel, Ava lives with progressive parents and is dating a cool girl Chloe who her parents adore. But Ava is itching to actually explore her own thoughts, feelings, sense of style and sexuality. She does this by getting into another school where freedom to learn is stressful but they refer to their teachers by their first names and kids are generally friendly and "normal". Because of this, Ava gets to wear her pink shirt and colors, but she must hide it from her girlfriend who's very uppity about these things, dressed in her all-black ensembles.

Ava is hooked up with Ethan and enjoys kissing boys, befriends Sam, and realizes that a girl from the clique that has taken her into the fold is actually a lesbian. But, her worlds collide eventually and Ava must confront her sexuality and herself. Ava definitely chooses herself rather than the thoughts of others. Is it a bit cheesy, yes, but it's palpable.
