This 2012 short book is really a 66 page tractate on the author's assertion that free
will is an illusion. A comfortable, conventional one used in the law and elsewhere, but
an illusion all the same. Harris has a PhD in neuroscience and he cites the recent research
that the brain "decides" on a motion or desire milliseconds before the consciousness is
aware of it. Others have posited this research to reach the same conclusion, but he does
so here in a concise, clear and thoughtful manner. Provocative and important.
