There was a story toward the end of the book that absolutely knocked the air out of me. After I'd managed to stop openly weeping, I called my mother. It was, of course, way past her bedtime, and I made my apologies, but then I said, "Mom, there is this thing that I just have to read you."

And I did.

And when I was finished, my mother was crying, too. And then we spent an hour talking about her mother, who died long before I was born, and it felt like there were three generations of women on the phone instead of two, and that is the gift of Cheryl Strayed's writing.

Read this book.
