While this is a wonderful segment in the Dark Materials triology, I've marked it down to four stars because it doesn't stand alone as a novel as well as The Golden Compass.

The problem is it's abrupt ending. Even though the book must, of necessity, lure people into the next part of the story in The Amber Spyglass, it should also provide a satisfying story on its own. The ending fails on that account.
