I actually enjoyed this more than the first book in the trilogy, because of the amount of history and background given in this book about the Arthurian legend. Stewart does a fair amount of work bringing military history of the time period (about 500 AD). This book deals with ARthur as a young boy growing up to the time of his becoming King, and his achievements in consolidating Britain under his rule. It also deals with Merlin as he grows older and his pride in Arthur, but also with his own problems as he loses his powers and has to deal with Morgana coming after him while he is weak.
Stewart was a writer who paid a great deal of attention to details. That is part of what made reading her books so enjoyable is how much detail went into her characters, and the plot of the book. These books on the Arthurian legend are a great addition for those people who enjoy reading books in this genre.
