So firstly, because I have this in Kindle version and there is no spiel on the Amazon page (or I couldn't be bothered to find one prior to downloading), I did not realise this was a children's book until I began reading it. I enjoyed the first bit before Katy was a moron and broke herself (thou shalt not disobey thy elders!), but then it became a little too moralistic for my liking. Of course this was written in a different time for an audience with different sensibilities, but I still think the School of Pain lesson was pushing it a little. I imagined myself reading this to a little girl until that part, at which point I starting squirming. Shame really because until then I thought Katy was a really positive, headstrong female character whom I very much liked! I didn't like her any less because of the Christian moral shoved down my throat, but I lost the will to hear about it once Cousin Helen stepped in with her tale of woe.
