The Tea Rose
by Jennifer Donnelly
by Jennifer Donnelly
The story takes place in the late Victorian era and tells the tale of Fiona, a young girl with a dream of owning her own tea-shop. In many ways it's a classic exploration of the American Dream - Theodore Dreiser kept popping into my head while I was reading.
It was a very entertaining and captivating story. I really cared about the characters and missed them when I wasn't able to read. And I just wanted to continue reading this book all the time. It had it all: drama, love, sorrow, hope, ambitious characters, bad guys, tea, murder ... and Jack the Ripper.
There was one thing that kept it from being a 5-star read: There were just too many unrealistic coincidences! Cheap, unnecessary tricks that just made me roll my eyes! That ruined it a bit for me.
But the girly side of me absolutely loved it! It was such a cozy read.
