The writing itself wasn't HORRIBLE, but it couldn't save the bad plot. I despised the so-called protagonist, Allison, who was so utterly unsympathetic, vain, self-absorbed, and unremorseful as to be bordering on sociopathy. She was a flat character, and I just couldn't feel anything for her. I was sick to death of hearing about how "perfect" she had been before going to jail and how difficult her middle-class-suburbia upbringing was. Give me a break. (view spoiler)

Also, I do NOT recommend the audiobook format of this one. The "Charm" narrator sounded heavily congested. The imitation of Gus's shaky-old-man voice was annoying, and the unnecessarily high-pitched, dragged-out voice given to Joshua made him sound obnoxious and whiny in a way that the text-based book probably would not have.
