I bought this book because my sister's name is Bernadette and the tales of school gate politics resonated with her tales of being a stay at home mum. I have pretty much always been a working mum so I've avoided all of this! I love stories of mothers and daughters and Bee and Bernadette's story rings true. Bernadette is a genius architect who has let her professional life slip away from her after a major professional disappointment. When this is revealed mid way through the book it is devastating and a very real metaphor of those life experiences that take the wind out of your sails. Bee is aa talented well adjusted kid who loves her almost agoraphobic mum. Maria Semple has a good eye for the humour in our foibles while still being optimistic about people and their capacity for goodness.
