I should clarify that the four stars are possibly not really merited here, but I happen to love Inspector Wexford and this feels like a really good ending to his story. (Or not. I'll keep reading the Wexford novels as long as she keeps writing them.) As a novel, it's not Rendell's best; some sentences get tangled up on themselves, and it doesn't really stand on its own -- you need to know Wexford's backstory, and I can't imagine that this would be very enjoyable if you hadn't read A Sight For Sore Eyes, to which this is a sequel. And as a mystery it's not terribly satisfying. If you've read the previous novel you already know all the whys and wherefores of three of the murders, and the resolution of the fourth relies on some fairly wild coincidences.

But although I concede that this sequel is really not as good as A Sight For Sore Eyes (which I just finished two days ago, so it is fresh in my mind), I found it a very enjoyable conclusion to the story.
