I really enjoyed this book - the characters were all realistically and likable and the author knew them well. The book has a lot of good common sense despite the main character being sometimes painfully naive but there was always a character to call her out on it so that she never reached annoying levels where you want to reach in and smack her. I enjoyed the historical backdrop for the novel as well; West Virginia right after the stock market crash and then the year following as the mines shut down, racial tensions rise and everyone is suddenly trying to survive on nothing. The story of a midwife is fascinating because even as the whole world breaks down, there are still babies being born and how a community handles that event in hard times makes for a great story.
