I was tempted many times to abandon this book, but I kept hoping it would get better. It didn't.
The story is actually three stories: the tale of the unnamed daughter of Paul, a history professor, who becomes fascinated with a mystery surrounding her father's research, the story of Paul himself and his search for his missing mentor, Professor Rossi, and the story of Professor Rossi. All three narratives revolve around the 15th century ruler of Wallachia, Vlad Tepes, also called "Vlad the Impaler" and his fictional counterpart Count Dracula. The story is told primarily from the daughter's perspective as she gathers information from her father's oral stories, his writings and research, and from letters. It's not a horror story, but it does delve into the supernatural. But basically, it's about 400 pages too long, with too much rehashing of previous knowledge. I was bored.
