Finally got around to reading this fantasy (so that I could properly enjoy the sequel Flora's Dare) and am very glad I did. This military society, which seems to be located in a mythical California called Califa, is full of eccentric characters with mind-boggling names. Flora and her pal Udo (who favors flamboyant attire like crinolines, eye make-up and outrageous hats) are well-matched, their adventures are compelling, and the breezy tone is a breath of fresh air. Imaginative and very enjoyable.
