Farida's review
Journey Between Worlds by Sylvia Engdahl (Goodreads author!)
I should read the updated version of this book. I hope that some of the dated bits have been removed. This book is put in science-fiction but it's also "space romance." The trip between Earth and Mars takes 10 months in the book, and Engdahl is quite convincing (to me) that the trip to Mars would be a one way trip for most.
1/1/08: I just reread this book last night, and in the book it actually took 10 weeks to get from Earth to Mars. I looked up and told my husband, "Ten weeks? Well then, that's totally doable." Of course, even in the book it all depended upon where Earth and Mars were in relation to each other.
My feelings about Manifest Destiny aside, I don't think I have the pioneering spirit. I'd love to go out and visit other planets and the stars, but ultimately I'd like to return to Earth in time for tea.
