Maybe it's because I've already watched the film adaptation (view spoiler). Maybe it's the lack of tragic deaths. But I didn't enjoy this volume as much as the last four. The revelations about Miu were interesting, but they lacked the punch I've come to expect from Nomura's novels. Nor does it help that Konoha's such a chump throughout this story that I kept hoping Kotobuki would slap the snot out of him.

But at least the ending promises interesting developments in the future, including perhaps an answer to just where Tohko came from and how her power has any relevancy to a series that is in every other aspect a non-fantastic mystery story.

“I said, Saturday is the first day of my National Center Test."

"That's tomorrow, though!" My eyes bugged out.

"Yes, ever since antiquity, the day after Friday has been Saturday.”
