it was amazing
bookshelves: 20th-century, british-fiction, historical-fiction

Forget the insipid, Hollywood-ised movie adaptation with Gwyneth Paltrow and read this instead. Byatt is far from an easy writer to grapple with, but I've always found her an immensely rewarding one. That I wasn't fond of the Victorian-pastiche poetry which crops up throughout Possession is not a slight on Byatt's work—it's a testament to how successfully she recreates a genre of writing which I mostly cannot stand. Her prose throughout is beautiful, conjuring up people who are always fully realised, if not always terribly likeable, and Byatt delights in poking sly fun at some of the more absurd aspects of literary academia. A dense and sometimes difficult read that nevertheless rewards re-reading.
