If you were teased by "Lot 49" but too timid to attempt "Gravity's Rainbow", this is a great primer before you make that obligatory leap. A manageable, fantastical palimpsest history of alligator hunting in Manhattan, Pynchon's first (?) novel serves up paranoia, spies, lethargic lead characters, and dense tangents like a sampler plate of appetizers. Feast on the ones you like, nibble at the rest.
