(From my book blog)

Okay I’m not even going to pretend that this is a good book, but I had a total blast reading it. It could be because last month I went to Vegas with 20 of my best lady friends and it was amazing, and I am still enamored of all things Vegas. It could be because this is exactly the best kind of trashy book - shameless, fun, and hard to put down.

The heroine’s name is Lucky. GET IT? Lucky O’Toole, to be exact, and she’s a “problem” solver for Babylon, a big casino on the Strip. There’s a murder and several hot men and her mother runs a brothel and also her best friend is a female impersonator and he’s in love with her. Also there’s porn and wife-swapping associations and the whole thing is just so ridiculous that it’s best not to pay attention to the particulars.

At one point, Lucky takes a gun from a security officer and shoots an anaconda in the head. Like, an actual snake. That’s how ridiculous this book is. If that sounds like fun to you, then you’re the perfect audience. If you are asking questions about what the fuck an anaconda was doing in Vegas, then move on.

This book reminded me a LOT of Jane Evanoivich’s Stephanie Plum series, but where I found Stephanie Plum to be boring, incompetent, and unfunny, Lucky is smart and amazing at her job. In a genre where many heroines are so fucking stupid they’d go home with The Situation or his Regency equivalent, it’s nice to spend some time with a woman who can get shit done and who won’t settle for second best.

And just a small thing - the fictional casino, the Babylon, is actually pretty well-imagined. I hate contrived settings (does that makes sense?) and I think that Deborah Coontz did a great job of imitating a big Vegas hotel and its themed nature (the rooftop bar is called Babel, there’s a Sodom and Gomorrah suite, etc) without going too too far over the top. I mean, a little over-the-top is expected, right? It is, after all, Vegas.
