Based on the life of the author's grandmother, this slim volume gives a sense of time and place (Cuba, 1912) while also presenting a story about a girl, Fefa, with "word blindness" (dyslexia). The dyslexia portion of the story was not as strong as I would wish although you do get a sense of Fefa's frustrations. Fefa's family members never fully emerge as individuals except for an older brother. As always though, I enjoyed Engle's lyrical language.
