While this book is well written as a narrative, I found it a bit like a journal, somewhat self indulgent and at time very tedious in that the characters were not as well wrought as the graphic information of various body parts and the primitive surgery performed on them. I almost gave up on it half way through and it was only hard slog that got me to finish it so that I might find something redeeming in it. It did not evoke any sense of place for me.
