My " in a nutshell" summary...

A man with a gun and a cell phone enters a third grade classroom. Hostages, a snowstorm and chaos follow.

My thoughts after reading this book...

I found this book to be fascinating, exciting, thrilling and realistic. A strange man enters a school building that houses students readying for early dismissal on the day before spring break. No one knows what is happening. There is a massive snowstorm that adds to the chaos and communication is a mess. No one has a clue who the gunman is or if he is working alone or what he wants. The story is told by five key characters who all have varying degrees of dysfunction and different reasons for being where they are. There are other issues going on...a father's relationship with his daughter, divorces, abandonments, affairs, and more...but the author fits them neatly into this story. The author skillfully leads us to believe the bad guy could be any number of people. The ending is phenomenal.

What I loved about this book...

I loved the way the author enabled me to know the key characters...flaws, attributes, everything. I loved the way 13 year old Augie looked after her brother and the way Mrs. Oliver, third grade teacher, fiercely protected her students. I loved the side stories...
Mrs. Oliver's bedazzled denim jumper, Twinkie the dog...some joy in the midst of this disastrous situation.

What I didn't love...

Hmmm...nothing really...this book has everything I love in a book! Short clear chapters that make you hate putting this book down and an element of reality...this stuff happens!
Perhaps, if anything, Mrs. Oliver was too much of a saint? But that's just me...

Final thoughts...

I found this book to be an exciting reading experience...one that is hard to forget.
