This is up there with Bone in the category of great graphic novel with appeal to all ages. This guy is really at the top of his craft--at this level, you are distinguishing between individual taste rather than ranking by skill.

Reading these books is like watching a Miyazaki movie. The story line grabs you right from the outset, the art draws you in even more, and every once in a while you turn the page to a truly breathtaking vista that you wish you were seeing on a big screen.

It's appealing to younger readers but doesn't shy away from dark themes and real suffering. The reader is never talked down to--the author is writing something that other people like him are going to want to read, not mistakenly thinking kids need you to dumb down the story and sugar coat the emotional edges for them.
