Byars does some things well in this novel and other things not so well. She killed off the mother, which is common in books for tweens and teens, but she really didn't need to kill off the mother. The story should have been longer in order to further develop the characters. I also didn't buy into Sara being so willing to run off to a party minutes after her brother is home.

I did like the comparison of people being at different steps in life. I also liked that at times the story was told from Charlie's point of view. This book is a quick and easy read.
