I am always happy to see a book for young people about an individual I encountered through an earlier book for adults. MacColl introduces Beryl Markham as a wild child in Colonial British East Africa. Chapters about Beryl's childhood alternate with flight logs that show her achievements as an adult. Young readers will love her adventures, the way she feels more at home with people in the Nandi tribe than British colonials, and how loyal she is to people, animals and the land she loves. This is a good introduction to a complicated woman who is probably less likeable the more one knows about her. PROMISE THE NIGHT goes just far enough into her life to show her accomplishments without also showing too many warts.
